First Time Guests

We understand that a first-time visit can be awkward. We hope that the information here will help make you feel a bit more comfortable.  If there’s anything else you'd like to know before you visit, please don't hesitate to call the church office at 207-945-9567.  Our friendly staff will be happy to answer your questions.

We’re located at 703 Essex Street in Bangor. On Sunday mornings you can enter through the double doors at the front or rear of the building. (During the week only the rear entrance is open.) Designated handicap parking is located by the rear doors. First United Methodist Church is fully wheelchair accessible.

We invite you to come as you are. There’s no dress code, and you’ll find people wearing everything from jeans and t-shirts to suits and ties. There’s a "Welcome Table" in the lobby where greeters will offer you a gift bag. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. We’re here to help you feel at home! You’ll find ushers stationed at the sanctuary entrance to help you find hearing assistance devices, large print hymnals and bulletins, children's activity bags, and to help with any other need you may have.

Sunday Mornings at 10:30 AM

Our Sunday service generally lasts between 60 and 75 minutes, and childcare is available for infants through age 3. We include a children’s message each Sunday, and afterwards children through Grade 8 are welcome to either stay for the remainder of worship or leave for Sunday School. The Fellowship Choir sings from September to June, and our bell and chime choirs also share musical offerings occasionally. During the summer a variety of individuals provide special music. We use TV monitors to display prayers and hymns, as well as to illustrate the sermon and highlight various church ministries. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month and the Table is open to all persons. We serve grape juice in place of wine, and a gluten-free alternative to the bread is available - just go to the middle server when you come forward. We hope you'll stay and join us in the fellowship hall for refreshments and conversation immediately following the service.

Winter Worship

We rarely cancel worship due to the weather, but if there's a chance that we will (or if we anticipate that people will stay home because of poor driving conditions) we'll post an at-home worship service on our blog page (click here) on Saturday night or early Sunday morning. There you'll find prayers, music, scripture readings, and a recorded sermon.
