VITAL CONVERSATIONS: RACE
As you may know, the theme of the 2017 Annual Conference was “Vital Conversations: Race”. The premise was that we can’t keep the issue of racism behind a locked door. We’re called to open the door, identify the injustice of racism, and examine our own personal challenges. To that end Bangor First is offering two opportunities to engage and discuss the topic of racism.

RACE: THE POWER OF AN ILLUSION During the month of September we will once again offer the opportunity to view and discuss the powerful documentary, “Race: The Power of an Illusion”. This 3-part series explores beliefs about race, privilege, policy, and justice. Each Sunday we will meet at noon in the Fireside Room. Feel free to carry in your refreshments from fellowship time or bring a bag lunch. Each session will feature a 45-minute video segment followed by a brief time for discussion. |
September 3 — “The Difference Between Us”
This episode explores why humans can’t be subdivided into races, and how there isn't a single characteristic, trait, or gene that can be used to distinguish all members of one race from all members of another.
September 10 — ”The Story We Tell”
In this episode we look at the eye-opening tale of how deep social inequalities came to be rationalized as natural—deflecting attention from social practices and public policies that benefited whites.
September 17 — “The House We Live In”
This final episode focuses not on individual attitudes and behavior, but on the ways our institutions and policies advantage some racial groups at the expense of others.

Racism and oppression have a long and painful past and present. It is an open, aching human wound that reflects a fracture in our relationship with God. Understanding how it was promoted and is still alive and acting out in the construct of our beliefs and systems and structures is the beginning of caring for this wound.
Through this series on faith and race we pray that God will strengthen your stand, inspire your movement towards God’s desire for humanity, and increase the Kingdom’s square footage with each step you take in Love.
