Please read the prologue and first chapter prior to our first meeting. This spiritual classic began as a simple request from one friend to another for a book explaining the spiritual life in terms that he and his friends could understand, avoiding theology and technical language. Nouwen's answer has become one of the most cherished books of our time. For Nouwen the most important spiritual journey of our lives involves claiming the truth of our belovedness and living into that truth by “letting our Belovedness become enfleshed in everything we think, say or do.” And to do this, we must explore how we are chosen, blessed, broken, and given to the world as God's beloved. The heart of Henri Nouwen's teaching is his conviction that we are beloved by God, and if we could truly understand and believe that, it would change the way we live our lives. Once we have heard the sacred voice that calls us the “Beloved” we will keep trying to hear it ever more clearly. In Nouwen’s words, “Like discovering a well in the desert, once you have touched wet ground, you want to dig deeper.” |
